Insights From Sam Canning: The Year of Change!

I'm wondering if you noticed the significant shifts at Cannings over the last six months! Let me pull the curtain to give you an insight.
Insights From Sam Canning: The Year of Change!

Over the last few years I was fixated on building value in the business and creating a polished, well rounded, self-managing business with a sharp moral compass and credentials to match. Towards the end of 2023 it became clear to me that this model was not sustainable, and most of the positive steps we were taking (on paper) were to the detriment of the health of the business. B-Corp, Carbon Neutral, renewable energy, 1% For The Planet, a role in head office for every conceivable function, and Cannings branded cupcakes for good measure. My vision of a mindful, purpose driven butchery business had become overly complex and misaligned with who I was and what I wanted my business to be. Not only that, from a cash flow perspective, things were getting tighter, and tighter and tighter. Intervention was required, and it wasn't going to be easy!

In Feb 2024, I made the decision to reduce the head office from a team of eight, down to a team of two (plus myself) to get back to our roots as a small, agile and tight knit team. I also decided to discontinue our external certifications such as B Corp and Carbon Neutral, close our resource intensive online store, sell our two poorer performing stores (Burwood and Toorak), reintroduce cash, and I jumped, wholeheartedly, back into the nitty gritty details such as pricing and product sourcing myself, to a point that would deliver Cannings back to a position of health.

Now, on the better side of these significant changes, and with the unwavering support of YOU, our beloved clientele, Cannings' seven remaining stores and the business as a whole is trending well. We have pulled through another tough time and I'm again reminded of what a blessing it is to be at the helm of such a resilient business. With my current mantra being something akin to 'simplify, simplify, simply', rest assured that just like the Good Ol' Days in Hawthorn, Cannings remains true to the core philosophy—It's free range or nothing!, and we continue to select our suppliers carefully whilst ensuring they're held accountable to their claims around free range standards, what the animals are fed, what they are vaccinated with and any other medical interventions that they may have been subjected to. Being the most reliable and trustworthy source of genuine free range produce is our fundamental and enduring purpose!

Something I'm reading at the moment, which I felt compelled to share. We are not the highest version of ourselves that we can imagine, we are the lowest version of ourselves that we can accept. In other words: Your possibilities are infinite if you make your aspirations non-negotiable.

Great to hear that you’re able to support Aron in his maiden business venture. It looks like he’s doing a good job!

Thanks for the comment, David. Yes… you’ve been with Cannings for a very long time! Don’t worry, I’m keeping a sharp eye on the FMD and LSD treatment options. So far we’re in the clear and our produce remains unadulterated. If you would like me to keep you updated on this topic, please email me sam@canningsbutchers.com.au with the subject: mRNA

Indeed. We did email all previous Online customers several times before the shutdown, but the store closures were fast and silent as we didn’t want to scare customers away from the brand or create a fuss. All is well…. thanks Megan!

Nice to read an honest account of the business. I have been a customer from the very start in Hawthorn and will continue to be. Love the products and am happy to support anybody such as yourself who is willing to back themselves.

Not being in the loop it was a shock to me that I couldn’t order online anymore and the Cannings closest to my in-laws had changed over to someone else. But now that I know why, I’m glad! Better to have Cannings around for some people rather than none :). Best wishes for the rest of the year and the new one ahead.

I remember the old days at Hawthorn. The foundations were made of rock. You were focused on having a sound and honest butchery service. Good to see you are like the reed in the wind. Bend and do not break.
You are a rare businessman. Hold fast. Please be honest with us, and avoid mRNA vaccine meat.

We were unable to continue shopping with you when online deliveries cease. We’re in the outer west and no bricks and mortar sites are accessible to us. But we wish you well with your business and hope success continues for you.

Nice to read this. I stopped shopping with you when online delivery was no longer available. I will revisit shopping with you again as I am a huge believer in Free Range, what the animals are fed and how they are vaccinated, etc, etc.

I went shopping to Brick Works for my usual “Cannings trip” and was sooo surprised and initially disappointed to discover you had gone!!!!

I completely understand from reading this letter below and as I am nowhere near your shops have now been delighted to support Aron and very happy that it’s like “nothing has changed”. He is a chip off the old block and it’s like “Cannings at Aron’s”. All the best for the future. 🤣
